Gymnastics  classes  info & schedule

'10 - '11 season schedule is here!

You may join at any time through the year.  Summer schedule runs
through August 19th.  '10 - '11 season begins September 7th.
Please check availability and schedule classes in advance.

Summer classes are going on now and there is still time
to join us.
Class descriptions:  (We have named our classes to better
reflect what you are looking for in your gymnastics class experience.)
Hoppers and Boppers:
Boppers are just 33 months to 44months old and POTTY TRAINED.  Being part of
a class is a new experience and some class time is spent learning how to
behave in a class setting;  i.e. taking turns, lining up, following directions.  They
may or may not be jumping two feet at once and/or hopping on one foot.
Cartwheels are placement of two hands on a cartwheel mat and stepping or
kicking their feet to other side.
Hoppers are 3yrs – 5yrs and are developing their social skills along with their
motor skills.  Some need more reminders than others to follow directions and
take turns.  They usually are able to jump with both feet at once and land on two
feet bending their knees safely from 12 inches and more with appropriate
padding.  Hoppers can hop several times on one foot without needing to place the
other back down.  Some can already skip alternating feet.  Cartwheels are starting
to have a favorite side and legs are kicked over cartwheel mat without touching
feet on mat and land on feet on other side.
Hoppers & Boppers are in class together to learn social as well as gymnastic
skills.  Hoppers have an opportunity to be more of a leader through class while
Boppers can learn from the older more experienced Hopper.s
Skippers – 5 – 7 yrs old (in kindergarten or just missed cut – off)
Skippers are 5 – 7 years old and kindergarten age or very close.  Skippers usually
can skip alternating feet and we work on learning or improving upon a run, skip,
cartwheel.  We usually use a cartwheel mat but expect legs to stay apart for
cartwheel and emphasize the lunge position before and after cartwheel.  We do
bridges in class, but mainly only push into bridge position and return back to floor.
Swingers – 6 – 10 yrs old – All 1st & 2nd, new 3rd grade, some 4th & 5th  grade.
Swingers are getting “in the swing of things” in more ways than one.  They are
now in a full day of school and are ready to handle an hour long gymnastics
class.  Swingers love to swing on bars, rope, etc. at gymnastics.  They know the
difference between a cartwheel (legs stay apart) and a round-off (legs start apart
and then come together before landing).  Swingers are learning to or may already
be able to kick bridges over and bend back into bridges.  We’ll work on improving
strength in the handstand position to better support more advanced gymnastics
skills and have a lot of variety in experiencing all different apparatus available.
Springers – 8 – 16 yrs old with experience and strong interest
Springers have had gymnastics experience and are able to do cartwheels and
round-offs well.  Springers can kick a bridge over with little or no assistance and
can control a handstand into either a bridge or a forward roll.  Some may already
be able to do a front and/or back handspring unassisted.  Springers are all about
handsprings and we’ll be practicing them front and back but also spending lots of
time on the other apparatus.
Movers and Groovers are 9 yrs and up and may or may not have
gymnastics experience
Movers and Groovers love all the fun aspects of gymnastics and may or may not
want to learn handsprings and more advanced gymnastics skills.  Classes will
have emphasis on fun and varied exercise.  Cartwheels, round-offs and
handstands will be a staple in every class but we’ll mix it up using the balls and
parachute more than in Springers classes and work on skills where participants
feel safe and successful, but also challenged.  Movers and Groovers will learn to
use the chin-dip assist machine and will use it regularly.
Flippers are 9 yrs & up with experience and mastery of handsprings, front and
back.
Flippers can do front and back handsprings well enough unassisted that they can
work on connecting them with other skills.  Unlike tumblers, flippers will also be
learning skills on the other apparatus.
Tumblers are 8 and up wanting to improve tumbling skills
Tumblers are interested most in back handsprings and round-off back
handspring combinations.  We will also work on building strength to support
tumbling skills.  Those who can round-off, back handspring will also be working
on multiple back handsprings and flips.  Some time will also be spent on front
tumbling.  We will use the other apparatus mainly to improve strength and for
drills to apply to tumbling.  Tumbling classes will be held as clinics through the
summer so participants can sign up for the skill clinics which they are most
interested in.
Home school classes are held during normal school hours and are for kids
age 6 and up who are in at least 1st grade.
Adult strength & toning work-outs are held 2x/wk and members may
attend as often as they like.  No m/u option.

Back Handspring 6/17, 7/1, 7/15 7:30 – 8:30
Back Handspring clinics will be hour long classes focused on
learning the mechanics of the back handspring preparing
to eventually do back handsprings alone as well as out of
round-offs and into other skills such as back flips.  Class
time will be spent on practice drills which can be done
safely, even by beginner tumblers, on their own, as well as
being spotted for back handsprings on various gym
surfaces.  Some participants may be connecting their back
handsprings with round-offs and with flips.  Participants
will leave with a better understanding of proper form in
back handsprings and how to safely practice drills which
will lead to better back handsprings.
Round-off 6/24 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Round-off clinic will focus on the all important round-off.
We will go over efficient technique and try to get round-
offs ready for connecting to a back handspring.  Those
who are ready will be working on round-off, back
handsprings in both round-off and back handspring clinics.
Front Handspring 7/8, 8/12 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Front Handspring clinic will focus on front handsprings in
various situations.  Participants will learn the mechanics of
the front handspring on the floor, off the tumbl trak, and
as a vault off of the mini-tramp.
Time will be spent on drills and on assisted and unassisted
(if ready) front handsprings.  If participants are able to
execute front handsprings unassisted, they will be
improving technique and form as well as connecting with
and progressing to other skills.
Back Tuck 7/22 7:30 – 8:30
Back Tuck clinic will work the back flip in the tuck position.
(The most efficient flip which should be learned before
progressing to other body positions for the flip and
twisting flips.)  Participants will work on the back flip from
the standing position and those who can back handspring
unassisted will work them out of their handspring.
Participants should be able to back handspring with little
or no assistance.  This clinic is not recommended for
beginner tumblers.
Aerial 8/19 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Aerial clinic will emphasize the most efficient technique to
execute a side aerial or “aerial cartwheel”. (No handed
cartwheel).  Class time will be spent leaning how to circle
the arms in the approach and the timing of the take off of
a dive cartwheel, which is the progression to an aerial.
Participants who have already mastered the side aerial will
be introduced to the front aerial or aerial walk-over.
Participants should have mastery of a smooth cartwheel
beginning and finishing in the lunge position.
Tumble Clinic August 3, 4 ,5 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Three day tumble clinic held Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday will involve all skills from the other clinics and
may also include dive rolls, front flips and branis.  At least
half of each class will focus on round-offs and/or back
handsprings.  Participants who are ready may also be
connecting more tumbling skills and learning to twist.  All
tumble clinics will include strength conditioning.
